Interval Training

Interval training is becoming much more popular over recent years and for good reason. Many studies and experts have found that interval training can help you get a great and efficient workout in a minimum amount of time.



What is Interval Training?

Interval training workouts are pretty easy to perform. They simply include bursts of high intensity exercise followed by some rest. This process is repeated multiple times. One of the most common ways to interval train is via running. You don't have to be a runner, however, to perform interval training. If you are a walker, you could walk with short bursts of jogging mixed in to acheive higher intensity periods. One example of an interval workout would be to run at 90% for 1 minute and then rest for 1 minute. You would repeat this for the course of your workout, say 25 minutes. Most interval training workouts range from 20-40 minutes for the average person. One thing I would like to note is that if you have health problems, you will want to consult a doctor before performing intense jogging or running.

Benefits of Interval Training?

The great thing about interval training is that it burns calories at a fast pace. This allows you to get a great, calorie-killing workout finished in a shorter amount of time. Another benefit is that interval training will improve your overall conditioning. This can help you with other active things like hiking, a sport like soccer or basketball, or even common around the house tasks.

Interval Training and Fat Burn

Another great reason to add interval training to your workout plan is that many studies have shown that it burns more fat. If you are a distance runner, your body may get used to the speed and distance you are going over time. Due to this, your body may burn less fat over time during the same workout. During interval training, you are pushing your body harder. This harder exercise forces your body to react by burning more fat. One study found that interval training burns up to 36% more fat than a normal anaerobic exercise.

So now that you see all the benefits of interval training, you may want to consider adding it to your weekly workout routine.
